Behind the Scenes at Crafted Surprise: Made by Makers, for Makers

There’s a lot more behind a Crafted Surprise tool than you might realise. ❤️

We’re a small family business in Melbourne, and most of what we make starts with a very simple idea:

Someone needs a tool that works properly.

From there, things can get interesting.

Domingo is our tradesman and the one who turns those ideas into something you can actually hold in your hands. He makes our soap cutters, moulds, finishing tools and other wooden products in our workshop, taking the time to get the details right.

Rene, our mechanical engineer, is usually somewhere in the mix too. He works with Domingo on the more technical side of things, solving problems, refining designs and figuring out how to make an idea work when it isn't quite as straightforward as it first sounded.

Then there’s Fabian, our graphic designer, who works with customers on their soap stamps. Sometimes he gets a finished design. Sometimes he gets a rough sketch, a photo, a few words, or an idea that exists mostly in someone's head.

Somehow, he turns that into artwork that can become a stamp.

And then there’s me, keeping everyone moving in roughly the same direction. 😂

That’s the thing about being a small family business. There isn't a big production line where your order disappears into a system.

There are actual people behind it.

We make tools because we use them ourselves. We understand why a cutter needs to be sturdy, why a mould needs to be practical, why a stamp needs to make a clean impression, and why sometimes the standard option simply isn't the right one.

And when someone asks us, “Could you make this?”

Well... we usually want to see if we can. 😊

That’s probably one of the things we enjoy most about Crafted Surprise.

Taking an idea, working through the problems, making something with our hands, and eventually seeing it being used in another maker’s workshop.

That feels pretty special.
